Charles Dickens’ 200th Birthday

Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, David Copperfield….Charles Dickens (1812-1870) had a profound impact on English literature.  He is and forever will be part of the English canon.  He was a very popular author during his lifetime, and his works continue to be timeless classics.

Dickens’ popularity stems due to his unique characters, for giving a voice to the less privileged in Victorian England.  His thick plots and calls for social justice have made his texts timeless and still studied and adapted today.

Oliver Twist and Little Dorrit have been adapted for television several times, and texts such as Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, Little Dorrit , David Copperfield continue to be sold as classics in bookstores around the world.
